Person
Biography
Fernando Martín was born in 1963. He studied classical and modern dance in Spain at the National Conservatory of Dance in Madrid and at the Mudra School in Brussels (1984-86). After his studies, he was hired by the Ballet de Barcelona, La Dart Cia de Dansa and the Teatro del Liceo. In 1989, he returned to Belgium to join the Cie Archipel Sud. In 1991, he joined the Cie Pierre Droulers and, between 1992 and 1995, danced for the Cie José Besprovany. In 1996, he founded his own company, Fuepalbar Cie, in tandem with Monica Martí, with whom he made his first choreographies, while continuing to put his talent at the service of creators such as Alexander Barvoets, Eric Raeves, and Bud Blumenthal. In addition, in recent years, he has collaborated with Michèle Noiret as an assistant and rehearsal director on Territoires Intimes (2004) and danced in Les Arpenteurs (2008) by Michèle Noiret as well. For José Besprosvany, he was assistant and performer for 9 (2007-2008) and danced in About Butterfly (2009-2010) and dipe (2013-2014). As a teacher, Fernando Martín has taught at the Spanish Dance Association, the National School of Circus Arts in Brussels, the Training Programme of Charleroi/Danses, Dance in City (Newcastle), the Higher Conservatory of Dance (Madrid), the ISAC (Brussels), the ArtenDanse School (Limal), among others. He also conducted trainings for some contemporary dance companies in Brussels : Pierre Droulers, Michèle-Anne De Mey, Ultima Vez (Wim Vandekeybus), Thor (Thierry Smits. He signed for the Passerelles project the choreography " Jai débarqué dans ce temps " (?). In addition, he has led movement workshops for the Hispanic-Belgian Association of Brussels. With the creations Te Forras (1996) and Bubulebetó (1997), the Fuepalbar Cie quickly forged a singular character by mixing playfulness and abstraction, so-called "popular" or traditional dances, and phrasing with contemporary geometries. After his two creations, Fernando Martín continues alone this exploration of a dance drawing as much from the poetic as from the humorous, playing as much with the physical power as with the interiority. In 1998 he created a solo, Pero que dice, Tolgaz, followed the next year by Mismorigen (1999), a playful duet with his brother Julián, which confronts flamenco and contemporary dance through the theme of brotherly relations (S.A.C.D. prize for choreographic creation). After that, he created two group pieces: Ten-Sueño (2002), a quartet sliding between theater and dance, pain and desire, all impregnated with baroque hues; Mordre à travers (2004), a trio in which he explores more radically the abstraction of his language, a certain darkness or dark intensity, too. He then returned to duets with Drink your wine in my glass (2006), which brings together all the specificities of his signature (Nominated for the Prix du Théâtre et de la Danse 2006, Best Dance Performance category) and Ensimismados (2007), a piece of a completely different color (more frivolous "surrealist"), in the company of the singer-musician Carmen La Molinera. Then, to arrive at his latest creation (2009-2011): So, call me I.K. & Friends, a piece for five dancers in three times/three universes for the same movement. Currently he is developing the project "Movement Workshop for people with more experience behind them", the seed of a future new creation In Solito / Appartenance, and he is a performer for the show "The Great He-Goat" (creation 2019) of the Cie. Mossoux- Bonté. In addition, he followed several trainings in Brussels in shiatsu and do in with master Kawada (1993-96), as well as in sei ki with master Kischi (1997).
