Biography
Pearl Primus was born in Trinidad and raised in New York City. An artist committed to her African heritage, she combined anthropology with choreography to help break down the terrible racial barriers that stood in her way. In 1941, she entered the New Dance Group's interracial dance school as a scholarship student. Two years later, she launched her professional career with her first solo dance recital.
