Within dance practices, rituals are continually created, repeated and transmitted in a multitude of ways. What are their qualities, their singularities and their effects on dancers and their audiences? Using multidisciplinary approaches, this collection of essays examines precisely what the rituals invented by dancers "are" and what they "do" in practice. Whether through the impetuous political dimension they raise, the way they activate and presentify the invisible world, their ambivalences or what they displace and alter bodily, these rituals are experienced as singular and profoundly transformative. Focusing on contrasting choreographic practices from different cultures, this collective book - introduced by a theoretical essay probing the relationship between dance and ritual - offers a fresh reflection on the role of rituals in dance practices and their power to act. Edited by Laura Fléty, an anthropologist specializing in Andean dances and rituals (associate researcher at Mondes américains and MUSIDANSE).
