Umwelt
Creators: Maguy Marin, Alexandre Béneteaud, Cathy Ray
Nine performers appear and disappear through gaps in a wall of mirrors. Each appearance is a small scene, inspired by everyday life situations. A powerful wind blows on stage and makes the mirrors shake to the sound of electric guitars. The changing reflections of the dancers in the flickering mirrors reflect and transform the human existence that surges like a violent storm. In a hypnotic succession of scenes, choreographer Maguy Marin portrays human existence as a perpetual movement from which emerges above all the tumultuous relationship of man to his environment. The title Umwelt (environment, milieu) suggests the underlying intention of the piece. The carelessness with which human beings lead their lives generates a growing mountain of waste on the front of the stage. Human traces that indicate an imminent catastrophe. According to Maguy Marin, the life that continues to take place in the background could be seriously disrupted in the near future.
