Modern Dance
Creators: Johanne Saunier, Jim Clayburgh, Virginie Gervaise
Modern Dance features three women dancing to exhaustion, as in the American marathons of the Great Depression. The dancers go through the ordeal with enthusiasm and exaltation, just keeping their feet in rhythm on the dance floor. Carried by Miles Davis' Fast Track or in silence, their steps creating the music, they concentrate on the present, without thinking about the moment before or after. There is no dead time, because the end of the movement would lead to the fall, and a ring rope delimiting the stage is there to send the bodies back into the arena. The choreographer Johanne Saunier joins forces with the circus artist Mathurin Bolze to deploy this metaphor of the artist today and, in filigree, of the flight ahead of our world in crisis. A Modern Dance as an art of survival.
