Line of Oblivion, Le trait de l'oubli
Creators: Carlos Fuentes, Johanne Saunier, Jim Clayburgh, Arturo Fuentes, Claire Farah
Piece for viola damore, clarinets, dance, actor, live electronics and video. Voice and text by the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes (*1928). Note of intent All of us, migrants or travelers, have experienced the border, and the experience of embodying the stranger. By the violent contrasts of the worlds it separates, the Mexican border outclasses all experiences. Supposedly at peace, the two states have nothing in common but a landscape. Beliefs, cultures, economies and visions of the world, everything separates them and yet everything binds them inextricably : Siamese twins who are at war with each other. The story revolves around the enigma of Emiliano Barroso: who is this old Mexican leftist paralyzed, alone in this desert, in his wheelchair facing the American border, lost in his ruminations on the modern world? Carlos Fuentes focuses on the cultural, anthropological and economic realities that this demarcation partitions. A new paradigm of the border is emerging, which tends to be global. A wall of surveillance is now standing, not as a metaphor, but as the very reality of the disastrous apotheosis of capitalism. As it is already the case on the shores of the Rio Norte, every movement made on the stage of Line of Oblivion will be captured and recorded. Its trace will disturb the music. Because the music is written, it is already there : it is the past. The movement is conditional. And their combination is actualized in the present: an interweaving of synchronized changes to better control the future. In this monitored landscape, the musical composition for viol, clarinets, dance and actor will use motion sensors to create a reactive environment, in which the movements of the dancer and the actor will alternate in a different way each night the score.
