Page à la main. Lucinda Childs et les pratiques de danse lettrée
Creators: Lou Forster
Lucinda Childs, a leading figure in dance in the 20th and 21st centuries, helped found the Judson Dance Theater in the early 1960s, a renowned collective that revitalized artistic practices in New York. With her company, founded in 1973, she became one of the leading figures in minimal and postmodern dance, while also collaborating, beginning in the 1980s, with the most prominent ballet companies in Europe and the United States. In Lucinda Childs’ creative process, writing and reading play a decisive role, whether she is designing her choreographies or transmitting them to her dancers. The result is an archive consisting of choreographic notes, scores, diagrams, and stage directions. By studying these fascinating graphic artifacts and the dance practices that produced them, Lou Forster highlights a unique technical gesture: dancing with a page in hand. This gesture lies at the foundation of Lucinda Childs’s approach, as well as that of certain avant-garde movements.
