Flamenco queer
Creators: Fernando Lopez Rodriguez
Since its beginnings, flamenco has been peppered with queer resistance and reversals. Underneath the official history, the gendered partition of song and dance has always been overturned from within by its performers, through the affirmation of gender and sexual dissidence within a conservative milieu. Flamenco may have been born a boy, but this masculinity was contested, and flamboyant personalities such as José Pérez Ocaña, Carmen de Mairena, and more recently Belén Maya and Israel Galván, alongside other lesser-known but equally decisive figures, shattered normative assignments. With Flamenco queer, Fernando López Rodríguez sets out to put the spotlight back on those who danced and sang, in tablaos or on the streets, in the margins or on the biggest stages, to bring their art to life.
