Kalakuta Republik - Extrait
Creators: Serge Aimé Coulibaly
Kalakuta Republik (2016) is largely inspired by the music and figure of Fela Kuti, founder of Nigeria's Kalakuta Republik, a crucible of political, social and musical protest in the 70s. Seven dancers move as if carried away by a frenzy of movement, evoking the physical and violent energy of the Revolution. Throughout the piece, breaths are short, panting, bodies constantly shaken by a rapid pulse that exalts life. "One always needs a poet", the phrase chanted at the end of Kalakuta Republik, refers to the aspiration for a new revolution led by music and, why not, dance.
