Kirina is the name of a town in present-day Guinea, the site of the last battle that founded the Mandingo Empire in West Africa. Kirina is a bit like our Western Waterloo. The great musician Rokia Traoré and choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly have imagined an instrumental ensemble, complemented by sung and spoken voices. A group of nine dancers is accompanied by forty amateur dancers from Montpellier. With a libretto by Senegalese writer Felwine Sarr, Kirina is a timeless tragedy expressed with urgency, necessity, inner violence and fragility, tracing the story of a proud people on the march towards its future.
