La marche dans les arts du spectacle
Creators: Sylvain Diaz, Guillaume Sintès
Is walking a matter of course? The question may seem incongruous. Yet there's nothing self-evident about walking: it's a constant struggle against gravity, which drags us towards the ground. And it's all the more difficult to see that, beyond its physicality, walking is also a metaphor for withdrawal, wandering, wandering or, on the contrary, openness to others. So how do we represent walking? If this question applies to all the arts, it takes on a particular meaning in the performing arts, due to the very effectiveness of walking. It is the zero movement of bodies on stage. Drawing on resources borrowed from anthropology, history, philosophy and sociology, we felt it necessary to consider the walking practices of today's artists, whose approach often borders on the disconcerting. In the works studied, walking escapes both destination and meaning, mobilizing not only the performers but also the spectators, moved by what is being played out not in front of them, but with them. Conceived during the last health crisis, the chapters in this book were written at a time when walking was no longer self-evident. If not impossible, it was restricted and constrained by public authorities. We have therefore conceived this book as an invitation to travel through the representations of walking in the contemporary performing arts.
