Notturnino is a work created by Thomas Hauert for Candoco Dance Company, the London-based contemporary dance company of disabled and non-disabled dancers. Notturnino is inspired by the film Toscas Kiss, a 1984 documentary by Daniel Schmid that takes place in the retirement home for opera singers created by Giuseppe Verdi in Italy. The retirees still remember their favorite roles, singing them powerfully in their woolen slippers and cardigans, raising questions about high art in simple, humble settings. This distortion of expectations of certain performers is very relevant to Candoco in this new creation.
