Bouli·e prend le maquis
Creators: Stella Cani
As a child, Bouli·e spent every summer in Corsica with their maternal grandparents, lulled by Corsican songs and stories of vendetta. Years later, when sensations and movements begin to crack open the traumatic amnesia surrounding the incest i·el experienced, Bouli·e is confronted by their family’s silence. Speech is i·el’s response. As a dancer, performer, and somatic practitioner, Bouli·e weaves the narrative of their family history together with that of the art world they navigate. They recount the continuum of violence and the mechanisms of silencing that are palpable among marginalized and vulnerable bodies within that world. Amid this tangle, fragment by fragment, we follow Bouli·e’s plan: going underground, fleeing, and fighting—a way to channel her anger and take justice into her own hands in the face of institutionalized violence. In this debut novel, Stella Cani offers a hybrid and singular style of writing, where forms and materials intertwine: we navigate between linear narration and poetic fragments, traditional songs and references to popular culture, correspondence, and archival images. This novel offers a sharp and incisive reflection, a queer and intersectional perspective rooted in current struggles against systemic violence—particularly domestic violence and adult domination.
