Pavane
Creators: Barbara Mavro Thalassitis, Erwin Wauters, Maurice Ravel, Laurence Halloy
The piece opens with music by Maurice Ravel: "Pavane pour une infante défunte sur un piano désaccordé". Nothing seems likely to move in this disquieting gloom. The tone seems set. And yet, on closer inspection, an insensible movement emerges. A cuddly toy that only a moment ago we took for a set piece comes to life. Following it, on the other side of the stage, a slender woman whose presence we hadn't even guessed at begins to move. A singular dialogue begins between a woman reduced to an object and a pink bear, an aesthete of a special kind. A choreographic and visual object conceived by Barbara Mavro Thalassitis, "Pavane" is a cruel fable, a sensual and playful joust from which emerges here and there a contained violence. It's about the relationship between men and women, and with it the loss of innocence. But humor is never far away. An undeniable physical performance, this little gem of strangeness invites us to reinterrogate the status of the body and the relationship between the sexes, which we were too quick to believe had been settled.
