Giselle - Mats Ek
Creators: Agnès Izrine
What is "Giselle" by choreographer Mats Ek (1945), and why is it a masterpiece that everyone should know? After a rapid initial run, "Giselle", the famous ballet by Perrot and Coralli, almost disappeared. Then it came back to become a kind of benchmark of Romantic dance, to the point of discouraging rereadings. Until the 1980s, when Mats Ek, son of choreographer Birgit Culberg, the true mother of contemporary Swedish ballet, seized upon it. And "Giselle" once again became an essential work in the repertory of the great dance institutions.
