Tournois

The third installment of a research project on the dialectic of conflict, “Tournois” features seven dancers arranged like pieces on a chessboard. Both manipulators and the manipulated, they face off in a series of “tournaments” that blur the boundaries between “play” and “self.” Verbal sparring, displays of strength, courtship rituals, or training exercises: constantly shifting between reality and fiction, the choreography navigates situations that are by turns humorous and intimate, exploring human relationships and the significance of another’s gaze. And sometimes all it takes is a single detail—a speck of sand in the gears of life—to tip everything over and lose control.
