Over more than 40 years, "Utt" has helped accustom Western audiences to butô. Yet its mysteries remain. Kô Murobushi choreographed this solo for and with Carlotta Ikeda, but its ends as much as its evolution express other, even deeper realities. There's butò, that extreme form of Japanese modernity. This mode of dance refuses to accept any definition, and is much more about questioning than applying recipes. So, as we explore this solo and the practice that gave rise to it, we come face to face with the history of Japan, the history of dance and the crossroads between cultures.
